Get to Know a WAMDA BoD Member: Mary DiGioia RD, LDN (WAMDA Treasurer)

Current place of employment and job title:
Greater Springfield Senior Services, Inc.

What inspired you to pursue a career in nutrition and dietetics?
I grew up loving food and cooking, but didn't want to pursue a career in culinary arts as I didn't want to miss business with pleasure. I started my education as a dual major in French and Anthropology and after a Nutrition 101 class my friend convinced me to take, I knew it was the field for me.

Why did you become a WAMDA member?
I've always been a WAMDA member, it's a great way to meet other dietitians in the field and learn about upcoming events. I saw an opening on the board and thought it would be a great way to be more involved!.

What goals do you have for your career?
I'm hoping to eventually pursue some higher education and continue working with the community to help improve food access. I'd love to do more work with community gardens or helping to facilitate more understanding about where food comes from and how to bring gardening to more urban settings.

What are your favorite hobbies outside of work?
If I'm not at work, you can find me weeding my garden, riding my bike, or doing some kind of DIY project. I just finished reupholstering some chairs for my back porch and I love how they turned out!
