Presented by Anne Maher RDN, LDN,CNSC

This talk will briefly discuss the value of Enteral Nutrition Therapy for patients of all ages and populations at home or in long term care. The new ASPEN Consensus Recommendations will be briefly reviewed. We will also go over the wide range of enteral formulas available today, including blenderized formulas, commercially produced and homemade. The transition to the new ENFit enteral connectors which began in 2014 is still not complete and we will discuss where we are now in the process. There will be some enteral and IV (parenteral) pumps and sets to see, including some of the new ENfit connector systems.

Objectives:

Discuss indications of Enteral Nutrition Therapy

Review the recent 2016 ASPEN Safe Practices for Enteral Nutrition Therapy

Describe different enteral formulas available including real food and blended formulas

Discuss where we are now in the new Enteral Connector design standards or ENFit

Part 2: Parenteral Nutrition Overview
Presented by Alyce Newton, MS, RDN, LDN, CNSC

The Parenteral Nutrition process is complex and involves multiple disciplines. In this presentation, the identification of the appropriate patients, nutrition assessment and development of the PN prescription, preparation, compounding, administration and PN monitoring will be discussed. Standardization of the PN process can help improve safe provision of PN. The ASPEN clinical guidelines, nutrient recommendations and toolkits will be used to help clinicians navigate each step of the PN process and provide appropriate, safe care for their patients.

Objectives:

Understand when parenteral nutrition (PN) is indicated and the goals of PN therapy

Review the process for writing a PN prescription

Describe the complexity and safety risks of the PN process

Discuss how standardization of the PN process can help improve safety
