About the Speaker:
Galaxie is a PhD candidate in the Food Science Department at UMass Amherst. The research projects she has worked on include the impact of plant bioactives on gut microbe communities, cannabinoid pharmacokinetics, and microbial interactions. In addition to her graduate studies, Galaxie has worked as a per diem dietitian at Cooley Dickinson Hospital for the past 5 years. In her free time, she enjoys gardening and visiting the numerous breweries that Western Massachusetts has to offer.
Program Objectives
This presentation will broadly cover the impact of cannabis use, including individual cannabinoids like CBD, on gastrointestinal function. It will review what the current evidence has shown and aims to provide listeners with an understanding of the growing world of cannabis and cannabinoid supplements from a nutrition therapy perspective.- Understand cannabinoids and the endocannabinoid system
- Describe the relationship between cannabinoids, the endocannabinoid system, and gastrointestinal function
- Discuss the current state of the evidence regarding the impact on cannabis and cannabinoids on a gastrointestinal dysfunction/disorders (i.e., IBS, IBD, and nausea/vomiting)
