WAMDA Annual Fitness 5K Run/Walk and Health Fair

For the past 18 years in celebration of National Nutrition Month, the Western Area Massachusetts Dietetic Association (WAMDA) has held its annual Fitness 5K Run/Walk and Health Fair at Look Park in Northampton. Since the first race in 1993, we have raised over $17,000.00 and have distributed that money to different agencies to help our neighbors in need.

This year we are very excited to announce our partnership with The Food Bank of Western Massachusetts. The Food Bank of Western Massachusetts provides individuals facing hunger with the food they need to survive and leads communities towards long-term solutions to the problem of hunger in our region. Serving the four counties of Western Massachusetts, The Food Bank is the leading provider of emergency food that reaches individuals and families with lower incomes. They are committed to working with our community to reduce hunger, increase food security, and to make nutritious food affordable and accessible for all residents in our region

Some startling statistics:

• 27% of the people The Food Bank serves are children; 11% are elderly; and 11% are homeless families.
• More than 108,000 people in the four counties seek food assistance at Food Bank of Western Massachusetts member agencies.
• In some towns in our region, hunger rates are more than six times higher than the statewide average.
• Poverty rates in the four counties are: 10.5% (Berkshire), 9.2% (Franklin), 15.1% (Hampden), and 9.7% (Hampshire).

On Saturday March 3, 2012 we will hold the 19th Annual WAMDA 5K Run/Walk and Health Fair at the Garden House in Look Park. We have designed a new route and will be using timing chips for the first time. We are very excited about our partnership with The Food Bank and anticipate an exceptional turn out this year. Prizes are awarded in all age categories.
